Tosca
Giacomo Puccini’s classic opera Tosca takes place in Rome. The year is 1800. For many years, Austria has ruled in northern Italy. But now the French emperor Napoleon is at war with Austria. Many who live in northern Italy cheer on Napoleon. Those who decide in Italy are in Austria. They imprison and kill those who hold Napoleon.
The opera depicts the tragic fate of Tuscany and her lover Cavaradossi. During a concentrated and passionate day, we follow their journey towards disaster, orchestrated by the cold-blooded police chief Scarpia.
John makes his Met debut as the ruthless baron Scarpia, corrupt chief of the Roman police.
